Patek Philippe was founded in Geneva in 1839 by Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek. French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, inventor of a keyless winding system, joined in 1845, and the firm took the name Patek, Philippe & Cie in 1851. The Stern family bought the company in 1932 and owns it still, which makes Patek Philippe the last family-owned independent watch manufacturer in Geneva.

The house made the first Swiss wristwatch in 1868, for Countess Koscowicz of Hungary, and went on to popularize the complications that define high watchmaking: the perpetual calendar, the split-seconds chronograph, and the minute repeater. Its Grandmaster Chime holds the record for the most expensive watch ever sold at auction, at US$31 million.

  • Grand Complications
