Audemars Piguet was founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, a village in the Vallée de Joux, by Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet, taking the name Audemars Piguet & Cie in 1881. It has stayed family-owned, and based in Le Brassus, ever since. Where other houses industrialized, AP doubled down on hand finishing and complicated movements.
Its early landmarks include the first minute-repeating movement for a wristwatch, in 1892, and the ultra-thin automatic tourbillon of 1986. Then came 1972: Gérald Genta's Royal Oak, a luxury sports watch in steel with exposed screws on its bezel and an integrated bracelet. It redesigned what a luxury watch was allowed to look like, and carried the house to the top of the market.
